The American political class – bad for our investment, great for investment

Investment

article by Bruno Cross Chek

Each American would be affected by a division of the results of two current surveys of investment. They seem to indicate that when it comes to the investment portfolio of the average American, political class action is really bad news for getting a good ROI. But when it comes to our politicians’ individualized investment portfolios political class action is really good news to get the ROI. How could this switch possible, he asked sarcastically?

Let’s begin with the first investment survey, which we have already referred in a previous post. An investment manager titled Eric Singer has just completed her analysis and developed something he called “Congressional Effect. “His overall conclusion from his analysis was as follows:” Over long periods in the stock market is significantly superior in the days when Congress is in session compared to the days when Congress is in session. “

More specifically, during Jan 1965 to December 2010 period:.

– The clean weather less than 1% of an average year when Congress was in session

– The stock market back on an average 16.6% annual basis, when Congress was in session, a difference in efficiency of almost 16% one year

-. But the results even more dramatic over the last ten years since the annual rate of return, when Congress was in progress during the past ten years was -7.6%, while it was 12.7%, because it was not in session

-. The difference was 20.3% in the past ten years, compared to around 16% over the time frame.

So it seems that listening to politicians talk, argue, and do not stray from their conference sessions instill confidence in the market, due to everyone’s investment portfolio have low returns when the Congress is actively doing their job.

But it’s not really a true statement, not all suffering because of the politicians in office. Paradoxically, the very politicians that everyone elses’ return on investment dive actually very good their investments when they are in office causes. A current analysis report titled, “Abnormal returns on common stock investments of members of the U. S. Home of Representatives, “shows that between 1985 and 2001, members of the Home a great advantage to the members of the public on their individualized return on investment. These results are entirely congruent with a similar, previous reports of the four authors of the Report of U.S. Senators

Specifically:.

– The study measured 16,000 of the Home of Representatives common stock transactions prefabricated by 300 members of the Home between 1985 and 2001

-. These transactions in securities return of “significant positive anomalies” (relative to the total market return)

-. This abnormal returns show. a portfolio that the buy of common shares by members of the Home would have mimicked beaten the market average approximately 6.6% per year

– This is less than the benefit that the senators from the previous investigation, but still considerably more than the overall market returns

-. A 0000 investment to the average share price returns of 11% over 17 years (ie 1985-2001, the period when the Home investigation) would have grown to get. 9000

– Same 0000 invested in investment towards the Home of Representatives average return, 6.6% higher than the market price would increase to 0.6 million, about three times as much – If the Home of Representatives was only 0.6 million, the average returns for the next twenty years, the Home member has increased over the first 0000 to about one million, while the average senator would have grown to approximately their original 0000 million.

Is there any wonder why politicians do everything they can to stay in office regardless of how their behavior and congressional voting behavior and a negative impact on the average American? Most of these people are not in it for the services they can for their country they are in it for the services they can do to their investment portfolio. The study concluded: “We find strong evidence that members of the Home or other form of non-public information they have for individualized gain.” Well, duh, I guess so.

Think of some of the investments Senator Harry Reid strategies in current years. According to John Ransom, Townhall.com writes for September 30, 2011, 2008, one month before oil prices took a dive history, the good senator sold between 000 and 000 of the energy that he held in the Dow Jones Energy Index. Shortly after he purchased between 000 and 000 worth of care farms in the Dow Jones Healthcare Index at a time when he was considering rewriting the nation’s health laws.

Or think of the antics of Congresswoman Ginny Brown-Waite. According to an article that was written by John Frank on June 30, 2009 St. Petersburg Times, one day before the Home of Representatives approved a major bank rescue plan In October 2008, Congressman purchased shares in Citigroup, one of the huge banks that received a significant portion of the bank bailout funding. About two weeks later, the day the Treasurer Henry Paulson announced that he would be 0,000,000,000 of taxpayers’ money to invest in nine massive banks, congress member purchased shares in Bank of America, one of the nine banks.

In both cases only smells to heaven. If ordinary Americans behaved in this way we would go to slammer for trading Insider. If members of the political class makes this kind of thing, nothing happens, except that they continue to enrich themselves rather than focusing on solving the problems of USA today.

The apparent conflict of interest is as disgusting as actual conflicts of interest, and these two examples are finally repulsive neighborhood. Maybe if they were more focused on solving our energy problems, our health care problems, or our dysfunctional banking system problems than trying to get their portfolio return to maximize, it will be in much superior shape.

Two steps urgently needed here. First of all federal elected needs place all their investments in a blind trust, as long as they are in office, a trust that she has no control over either the investment in that trust and timing of his actions in that trust. We need a surround of silence built between the politician and the entity that manages communication totally no confidence at all.

The second step would impose term limits on all federal politicians, so they are not in the office to enrich themselves to get, they come into the office to the problems of the country to solve. By limiting the potential long-term by term limits, elected to their positions used to enrich themselves and forbade them any control over their investment, while in the office, we have two positive results. First, these people actually do what is good for the country versus what is ideal for their individualized belongings. And second, by removing the temptation to occupy in the stock market through blind faith, they can actually spend more time working on solutions to problems versus working on individualized enrichment.

In light of millions of Americans who unemployed, or have given surplus in search of work, this behavior is reprehensible and should be criminal. It is no wonder that members of Congress as a whole, single digit approval ratings received. The least they can do is not in session because according to Mr. Singer, who would at least give us a chance to catch up to their out-sized investment income.

But what does this state about our politicians’ abilities: We would like them to something than to do what they normally do. Scary, very scary indeed.

Prudent Home Improvement: Now is a great time to remodel

Home Improvement

Article by SA HOME

Spring has sprung and hardware and home improvement stores are bursting with new merchandise–from patio sets to barbecues. In the home improvement retail universe, spring might as well be Christmas.

And normally, it’s hard to hold back until frost danger has passed before purchasing plants for the garden, thanks to garden centers’ tantalizing displays of beckoning baby tomato plants, herbs and flowers; you can’t help but dream about adding a new deck to the backyard and buying great new furniture for it; and if it’s time to paint the house, you want to get started on the project as soon as possible.

But this year, huge box stores are bracing for the worst: Home owner spending on remodeling is expected to drop 12 percent to 0.2 billion, which follows a 9.7 percent drop in 2008, according to Harvard University’s Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity.

Home Improvement that Splits the Difference

So what’s a home remodeling enthusiast to do? Should you also “wait and see” before jumping headlong into your list of spring projects out of fear that the economy could actually worsen? Or should you take full advantage of low prices and greater availability of labor?

If you follow national trends, you can split the difference and do a tiny bit of both.

Eight out of 10 homeowners surveyed by home improvement giant Lowe’s stated they’re planning to either paint their home interiors or upgrade their lawns and gardens themselves over the next year. At the same time, 35 percent of people surveyed by home-service contracting matchmaker ServiceMagic.com, stated they place off a home improvement project last year; only half of those people stated they plan to face that delayed project this year.

Craig Smith, ServiceMagic.com’s CEO, told the Wall Street Journal that requests for carpet cleaning services, furniture fixes and preventive maintenance on heating and air conditioning systems are on the rise, while requests for architects, engineers, designers and remodelers have dramatically declined.

What Does that Mean for You?

Well, if you have the money, time and inclination–and are willing to throw caution to the wind–today could be a great time to remodel.
